Welcome To The Summer Of Endless Hate.

As sick of hearing the name Heatley Ottawa fans have become, can you imagine how Bettman feels whenever he hears Balsillie’s?

Just when he thought it was safe to go back into the courtroom, Judge Baum turns up the heat.

Tonight Baum ruled that the September 10th auction will include all offers to buy the ‘Yotes, including those contingent upon moving the team.

Now, this isn’t to say Balsillie has won, but should Reinsdorf not come to an agreement with the city of Glendale, and maintains his bid at status quo, the path is clear for Balsillie to see his quest come to a successful conclusion.

My bet?

More money is going to appear out of nowhere, and suddenly the Reinsdorf bid is going to nearly match that of Balsillies.

I have little no faith that the citizens of Glendale are going to pony up a dime (let alone up to $75M) to keep the Coyotes in Glendale, but, should the Reinsdorf (aka the combined NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL) bid closely match that of Balsillie’s, no doubt Baum will decide to keep the team playing in Glendale (even with a 6th yr. escape clause) vs muddy the waters by accepting a bid sure to result in endless appeals.

But, two can play at that game, and I’d be more than willing to bet Balsillie will up the ante, and match any deal Reinsdorf reaches with the city of Glendale, that includes an escape clause.

This is going to get ugly, and Moyes looks to be the likliest winner.

  1. Gerald, when I saw the title of the piece, I immediately thought you were going to comment on Tim’s take of another Sens blog.

    Good times.

  2. GN:

Mr.Moyes is going to jail for leaking (contempt of court). Balsillie is defeated again by Bettman (read Corperate America and their justice system). Judge Baum and the politicians of the city of Glendale did not appreciate the disclosure…they even want Mrs. Moyes!

  3. Master Of Puppets Says:

What would happen if Balsillie ups his ante to say 250M (grossly overpaying) and wins? Since the Good Ole Boys (NHL Board of Governors) basically gave him the ‘nerd pledging the #1 jock fraternity’ treatment, WTF would happen?

You can own the franchise but you can’t move it? or can’t move it North of the border?

That the ownership issue should be resolved by the start of the season is the good news – The Dany ‘saga’ on the other hand … enjoy your blueballs.

  4. Master of Puppets:

The STREET has the 2nd Toronto Franchise @ 200 million…100 for the leafs…20 for Buffalo…80 for the rest of the guys.

So we are a long way from moving to Kitchener yet. And it is Kitchener… eventually and they shall be the “Kitchener/Waterloo Deichmen”.

Most of the “Owners” are good guys…I hate Bettman, he’s an Arsehole…He wins again…

But so many of them are broke, they cannot walk away from your (Jimmy’s) money forever!

  5. Nichols…I wasn’t gonna tuch that one with a Yashin stick, let alone my blog, lol!
Canucknik – Sheesh, you are such a pessimist, but, hey, just cause your paranoid….
    MOP, loved it, blueballs, bwahaha.
As for what would happen if he (Balsillie) won the bid, that remains to be seen, and that is what the NHL, and all other pro sports fear, a court ruling the leagues cannot impede reasonable movement of capital/commerce.
It is absolutely possible the court would rule Balsillie can move the team, and prevent the league from preventing his doing so.
As for Moyes, I highly doubt he’ll suffer anything more than a stern warning, his lawyers could face censure from the bar however, but still unlikely, IMO.
