A Look At PK Icetime in Last 4 GP.

Lets start with the Video highlights from Ottawa’s impressive win over Philly

With the recent departure of Vermette, I’ve been curious what the impact will be on both the PK (efficiency and role), and the teams over-all FO%.

Vermettes departure, via trade, marks the first non FA move this club has made including a long standing team member since Hossa left for Heater.  Change isn’t easy, and often fans and management alike get caught up in what will happen once a regular player leaves, so this provides an opportunity to see if the perceived impact is as great as the real impact.

The Stats Last 4 GP.

1. PK% – v. TB – 100% (0-4)

In the game vs. the Lightning, PK time was distributed among the following forwards;

Kelly – 4:11, Ruutu – 3:04, Alfredsson – 2:06, Fisher – 1:54, Winchester – 1:53, Spezza – 0:32, Heatley – 0:26, Shannon – 0:12

Among defensemen it was the usual suspects, with Lee getting the 3rd highest ice time, behind only Volchy and Kuba.  Both Bell and Camps saw spot duty with less then 0:40 on the PK.

FO% – 63%

2. PK% v. FLA = 50% (2-4)

In the game vs. the Panthers, PK time was distributed among the following forwards;

Alfredsson* – 3:15, Kelly – 3:00, Fisher* – 2:11, Winchester* – 1:31, Spezza – 1:11, Ruutu* – 0:49, Heatley – 0:49.

(*scored upon)

On the defense, Lee again picked up most of the remaining PK minutes after the usual (Kuba, Phillips, Volchy).

FO% – 58%

3.  PK v. Bruins = 100% (0-2)

In the game vs. the Bruins, PK time was distributed among the following forwards;

Fisher – 2:21, Alfredsson – 2:06, Kelly – 1:55, Spezza – 1:05, Heatley – 0:46, Ruutu – 0:25.

FOW% – 53%

4. PK% v. Flyers – 50% (1-2)

In the game vs. the Flyers, PK time was distributed among the following forwards;

Alfredsson* – 1:00, Fisher* – 1:00, Spezza – 0:37, Kelly – 0:37, Heatley – 0:26, Winchester – 0:26.

(*scored upon)

Lee again was tapped to be the 4th PK Dman.

FOW% – 52%

Over-all

PK% Last 4 GP – 75% (3-12), Last 11 GP – 85% (7-46), Season – 81%.

What is most interesting to note is that Spezza has earned a fair amount of PK time, and he has seemingly done well in the role.  Chalk up another good move by Clouston.  It would also appear the face-off wins are still coming, even without Vermette.
