Sens Ink WHL Prospect

As the salary cap increases the value of prospects, some players who have been over-looked in the traditional draft phase of their careers, find themselves getting second looks.  Players like Winchester, Penner, and Froegren make their way to the NHL after posting solid collegiate or non NHL professional careers.

Add Craig Shira to that list.  Leveraging a career year in the WHL, Shira, an average sized offensively gifted defenseman, has recently been acquired by the Senators and signed to a 3 yr. entry level contract.  Shira is not shy about laying on the body, and has been known to drop the gloves when required., he is highly regarded for his work ethic, and blue collar approach to the game.  Succeeding under the demanding Don Hay is a definite plus in the bio of any prospect.

Shira has shown consistent improvement in his game year over year, and is a favourite of coach Don Hay, competing with top Nashville defensive prospect Johnathan Blum for icetime on the Vancouver Giants. In fact, he is out-producing the former 1st round pick.

As a right handed shot PP defenseman, Shira will be a welcome addition to the Senators woeful prospect depth, and the team hopes to see him earn a spot on the Bingo roster next season, or, should the Giants season end sooner then expected, later this year.
